 The Lawrence school

The Lawrence School, Lovedale, Ooty is a 185 years old school for which a dormitory has been designed in a challenging steep valley where sunlight entry is very minimal. It not only redefines traditional norms but also prioritizes sustainability as a core principle. The primary goal is to create a space that transcends traditional dormitory experiences while ensuring sustainability remains at the forefront.

The design aims to provide students with a comfortable, nurturing environment while minimizing environmental impact by integrating passive design strategies and renewable energy sources to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint

Sustainability considerations are woven into every aspect of the design, from material selection to energy efficiency measures. Locally sourced, environmentally friendly materials are prioritized, reducing embodied energy and supporting the local economy. Passive heating trapping techniques, such as solarium, solar tunnels, trombe wall, central atrium are integrated to minimize reliance on mechanical systems and reduce energy costs.

The dormitory design for Lawrence School exemplifies a holistic approach to sustainability, seamlessly integrating eco-friendly design principles with student comfort and well-being. By prioritizing sustainability at every stage of the design process, the dormitory not only reduces its environmental impact but also educates students about the importance of living in harmony with nature.
